I won't eat fruitcake because I hate chunks of fruit in cakes or bread in general, but is fruitcake really that bad? Why does it suffer the brunt of every holiday joke in the book?

Coz it's just stuffed with a lot of.... stuff! It's not like a chocolate cake or something.. at least your tastebuds enjoy a certain taste instead of being obstructed by chunks of.. stuff!

It costs a lot for the materials to make a good fruitcake...but people don't want to pay $10++ for one. So they use inferior ingredients (synthetic fruit) to get the price down to where the bakery can make money selling for mass consumption prices of $5 or so.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Made with first rate ingredients, the fruit will take good, as will the rum or bourbon, and the cake will be delicious. A once a year treat.

When I was growing up, we had a fruit cake in the top of the pantry for 17 years. In college, I went to a friend's house for a Kwanzaa celebration. My Mom insisted that I didn't go empty handed. I took the fruit cake.

Several years later, that same fruit cake appeared at another friend's housewarming.

TastyKake makes a very flavorful fruitcake.

I have never ever had a piece of fruitcake that I enjoyed and neither has anyone else in the world that I know either. In addition to the general taste of fruitcake, I also hate those candied bits of fruit called Citron that is in so many fruitcakes. It really is that bad in my estimation.

A lot of people just don't like it. My mom makes one with an apple sauce cake recipe, and it's moist and delicious compared to the traditional. But because most people don't like it, the same cake gets regifted year after year as a joke.

Personally, fruitcakes are a joke in my family because my grandmother bakes dozens every year - and every year they bear a closer and closer resemblance (in taste and texture) to housebricks.

Because it tastes awful.
log onto recipelink.com and type in Jim's applesauce cake.
It looks just like fruitcake, except it has raisins, nuts, spices, and applesauce.
It's absolutely scrumptious. Our family demands it every holiday!
You must try it.

I don't think anybody else likes it either - people only bake it for gifts!
