I was stopped and given a fixed penalty for having no insurance. I was given 6 points and a 200 quid fine. I am going to court as my insurance company sent the renewal then cancellation letter to a random address and they admit it, but as far as I know, I may be able to reduce the fine in court, but has anyone had the points dropped down to less than 6 in court? as I believe this can't be done? I had no insurance for 5 weeks and had no idea at all that the company had cancelled it until I got stopped and checked. Has anyone been in this situation please?

If you can prove that you paid the renewal fee in good faith you may have a chance.

If you never paid, never got the renewal, and so on, then you are ****ed as you are responsible for validity of your own insurance before you step into the vehicle.

You can plead with the judge or comissioner for reduced sentence (however, the insurance admitting over the phone they screwed up your address is NOT good enough of excuse.)

yes I understand, what you have going for you is the truth. Its unfortunate that you misunderstood the start date of your insurance. Go into court and explain the truth, that you paid insurance, this was your first time, first car??? and you were so excited to be able to be the only driver in the family you did not know there was a start date (and here in the usa you can start on the same day you pay, so why your insurance company did that we may never know, the fact that all your facts support what you say, leaves it up to the judge as what to do. dress respectful use your honor or whatever is respectful over there good luck. most people make lousy excuses and cannot produce insurance, you can ok? best of luck.

explain to the judge what happened and get something in writing from your insurance company that you can give to the judge to prove what you say is true. if the judge is a fair judge he might dismiss the case. but then again if you let the insurance run out without renewing then it is your fault and a fair judge will likely see it that way. doesnt hurt to try though.

Their inability to contact you about your impending renewal does not absolve you from getting insurance.
YOU are responsible for making sure it is valid. It is NOT the insurer's responsibility to track you down.
If your insurance lapses, it is your fault for not checking it.
The date that it is in force is clearly written on the policy.
You can certainly go to court to plead your case, but it is doubtful that the lack of delivery of mail is going to help you.

They consider it your job to pay the bills and know when they are due.
