Nah- not starstruck- I'm a flight attendant myself and playing devil's advocate with the question about pilots and their prestige.

Flight Attendants definitely deserve more respect than they generally get from pax, the aviation industry and the general public. They are NOT just "flying waitresses".

While the Captain is technically responsible for the aircraft and the people in it (according to FARs) the flight attendants are the ones in the cabin making sure the safety equipment is in place and properly used, trying to be sure that the pax understand the safety features of the aircraft and where to go if something goes wrong, dealing with problems ranging from nervous passengers, squalling babies, ill-mannered children and usually their parents, people who insist on trying to stuff a steamer trunk in the overhead, people who won't sit down and keep their butt in their seat (the one assigned to them, hopefully), ATC and weather problems that are not controlled by ANYBODY on the aircraft, drunks, drunken stud-muffins, etc. There's MORE . . . . .

These men and women do a lot more than sling nuts and pretzels.

Not that I have an opinion about it . . . . .

Tough question, tough industry. I'm not sure about prestige but, at the very least flight attendants get to travel vastly, while most people in the country maybe make it to Disneyland every 5 years. As for pilots same thing, between always looking over your shoulder for the next layoff or labor action or salary cut and fighting seniority lists, it isn't very prestigious, as it once was. Bottom line blue collar jobs aren't really prestigious but at least yours has fringe benefits. It takes a quality person to fill and define any position not visa verse.:)

Do they have any anymore? What with the cutbacks, layoffs etc. Certainly, flight attendants don't have the mystique they did in the 50s -70s. Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for what you do, dealing with idiots day-in, day-out, and not losing cool.

hmm I have been in aviation for 20 years and not sure what to say. It is like why do people look at sports players and idolize them? People worship that which they don't understand.

I didn't think they had prestige. I have always seen them as waitresses in air. I wouldnt' want the job.

They're just flunkies there to make the passengers "happy", nothing more, nothing less.
