Unfortunately, I didn't get to know my grandparents very well before they passed on. However, a very grandfatherly man gave me some advice on the occasion of my engagement. He said, "Always give more than you take from the relationship -- and you'll never go wrong."
I have not always succeeded, but I have tried to live by that these last 15 years of marriage.

"Never judge a man till you've walked a mile in his shoes." I try always to apply this bit of wisdom.

when my son died my great grandmother told me about when she lost a child, she said to me,
"you never get over it, but it will soon start to hurt less."
That is the one thing that got me through that very tough time. Especially coming from a 97 yr old woman with memory problems, a woman who had children in the time when you lost one and you didn;t talk about it...you forgot about and started over again. She refused to forget...

Whenever you pay someone, get a receipt. Even your own brother!!
I apply it if the amount is such that I cannot pay it again if the other person says I didn't pay!!

Don't be afraid. I actually learned this from the fact that my grandma is practically terrified to leave her home town.
