It depends on the 16 year old. I would say no the 16 year old should have no bedtime if he/she is responsible enough to go to bed early enough to be rested for a good day of school the next day. If they are still getting good grades in school, then they can handle choosing what time they want to go to bed. I'm 17 and my parents still want me on a 9:30 bedtime(they think that I should go to bed really early to be awake for the next day, but I haven't been asleep at 9:30 since I was about 7). Believe it or not the responsible hard working students go to bed when they have to. We know are latest limits and we know what time we need to be asleep by in order to wake up in the morning. And not to mention if you give them a bedtime they aren't going to really going to go to sleep then. They will still decide when to close their eyes even if you have them in their room at 10. But even when you do decide to have a bedtime as a 17 year old I think 10:30 is pretty resonable. And you can always try it out at first. For two weeks let them pick there bed time. If they are always complaining about being tired tell them you'll give them a strict bedtime. But when their grades are suffering then a definite bedtime is in order.

It's not unheard of. It really depends on the kid. Some 16 year olds are mature and can get enough sleep on their own. If the 16 year old isn't getting up in time for school or is missing other activities because they are staying up too late then YES, they should definitely have a bed time.

I think the bedtime really depends on when the kid has to get up in the morning. 16 year olds need 8-10 hours of sleep. So if they need to get up at 6AM, they should be asleep no later than 10PM.

It really does depend on the kid.

The resposiblity of the teen is the biggest factor. An A student can stay up til 11pm on weekend and have no bedtime at all on the weekend. an student whom needs to be studing needs more rest and less free time for games and outside curriculm. There is no Best time. Midnight is too late for someone whom has the classes that 16yr olds have. Not sure what state your in so it really is grade specific. 10-11graders have more homework and credit to attain than the freshman and seniors............... What ever feels right to you. As long as they respect you and actually go to sleep.

I guess it depends on your teenager. My mom quit giving me a bedtime by the time I was 14 or 15. But I was also responsible enough to go to bed by 10 or 11. This did no affect my school work. I was always on the honour roll.

Yes, a 16 year old needs a bedtime. I would say on a school night no later than 10:00...(and only if they are stuck on some hard homework or something...) and on a weekend no later than 12:00...(unless you live in a really small town, then 11:00 or so because there is nothing but trouble to get into after 10:30)!!

no not a pisific bedtime as such. just make sure they know round about what time is suitable and ask them to stick to it.

give them some choice in the matter and ask them what time do they think is suitable to go to bed, taking into consideration school etc, so that they feel they arnt being treated as a baby. asking always helps rather then just stating what u want to happen, less likely to rebel.

make sure that its a decent time that u agree with obviously.

but telling a 16 year old child EXACTLY WHEN to go to bed will probably not work.

let them stay up later on weekends.

Not really. Maybe during the week cause of school but I think at 16 you should know what time to get to bed so you're not dead tired for school. I never had a bed time at that age but there was a no electronics after 10pm rule that was strictly enforced. That's no TV, phone, PC, video games, nada. So I pretty much would pass out by 11 most week nights. Weekends....nah. no bed time.

I'm 18 and in college but living at home

I don't have a bed time and haven't since my sophomore year of high school at that time I was 14. My parents taught me that I was old enough to be responsible for going to bed at a decent time so that I could go to school the next morning. If school starts at 7:30am and I had to leave at 7:00 to get there on time it was my job to get ready to leave and my parents would drive me.

They wanted to teach me that going to school was exactly like a job in the sense that I had to get there on time every day and there were consequences for being late(detention) even though at a job you would get fired it was teaching responsibility. it worked.

If you have a responsible teen I would say they can go to bed and get up for school in their own they SHOULD know better than to stay up all night if there is school the next day. However if you have a teen who is very irresponsible then you may want to set a bed time.

A 16 year old is too old to have a bedtime. When he/she goes off to college, how can you expect him/her to be responsible if he/she has had mommy and daddy telling him/her what time to go to bed every night?

If he/she goes to bed at 4 AM and has to get up at 7 AM, that is his/her problem.
