For many, a personal car is not a necessity. But, it can be difficult to break the automobile habit. Psycological hurdles can be even bigger than logistical hurdles.

I'm digging for positive encouragement to send to a family member who is *this close* to going car-free!

Help me out: What is your favorite aspect of a car-free lifestyle?

In order to live car-free a different organization is needed.
You should have every service you need at a reasonable distance, as it was in the old small towns.
If you need to drive miles to go shopping or to school you can't live car-free, or else, public transport must be very efficient, available, widespread and cheep.

well i think the best thing about being car-free would be you are helping the enviroment and you dont waste money on gas. but the bad thing is that you cant make like super long trips.

You don't have to go to work, because you can't get there.
No one will ask you to do the shopping, because you can't bring anything home.
...and the number one reason: You don't have to buy gasoline, pay for insurance, pay for maintenance on the car (these things cost about $4000/year!)

make sure you live in a low-crime area. I used to walk everywhere, but i kept getting attacked by people, vicious dogs, and other hazards, so I had to stop doing that.
