Edd, honey, there has been a lot of anti-Western sentiment in the Middle East for AGES.

The study you're citing has been proved to be wrong, but that fact always gets buried. 655,000 dead makes a better headline than "OOPS! We Basically Pulled Numbers Out of Our Butts!"

As to the Israeli/Palestinian fiasco, please tell me where I'm going wrong here. Has Israel not made SEVERAL attempts to appease the Palestinians, and yet the rockets still fly. Why is that? Doesn't Palestine want Israel wiped off the map, like the rest of her Arab neighbors? And if so, why should anyone care what the Israelis do in retaliation? Have the Israelis always been fair? No - I'm not saying that. But when your neighbors make no bones about the fact that they want you dead, and you're a small country like Israel, seems to me you'd BETTER carry one hell of a big stick.

The 655,000 dead number is a high number, and the total may be lower (it may also be higher, as many deaths go unreported, and there are no real numbers for initial war causalities...)

With approximately 100 Iraqi's dying per day (Pentagon estimate) the number works out to some 36,500 per year, and so some 100,000 dead over three years. Which is an admittedly abominable number of dead civilians...

As for world opinion of the US... President Bush had managed to alienate pretty much every nation on Earth, including our allies, within the first 100 days of his administration.

After 9/11, he squandered the goodwill of the world community, all suddenly sympathetic to America's loss... His administrations blind support for Israel, even when Israel was misbehaving, combined with the invasion of Iraq has turned the Arab Islamic world against the US.

Our tactics, and the failure to discover any evidence of weapons of mass destruction, as well as the failure to find any links between Saddam's regime and terrorists further discredited America in the eyes of the world.

Although the American people continue to accept the Bush administration's carefully choreographed slide away from their original position, the rest of the world remembers Bush's adamant assertions from the beginning of the war... and as a result America looks like a bunch of deranged idiots.

In the end - the United States has managed to go from the hero defending and promoting democracy globally, to a country vilified for 100 year old and older colonial power grabs...

Sucks to be us...

The killings in Iraq and Afghanistan are certainly contributing factors to the surge in anti American feelings. However, the base problem probably is our cause celeb--meddling in other countries affairs and attempting to force democracy upon other countries. Unfortunately, our motives have not been as purist as freedom, democracy or assisting the needy. The USA has sponsored coups in duly elected governments, invaded countries with little or no provocation, and literally enslaved millions through the edicts of the World Bank. America sponsors these events because her rulers seek to control other countries and their resources. The USA is not opposed to supporting a dictator if the dictator acquiesces to the needs of America. In the past, she has sponsored Baptista in Cuba, Shaw Pavlavi in Iran, Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, Asama in Afghanistan and Saddam in Iraq. The list goes on, and the point is made with those who distrust and hate America. Anti American sentiment has continued to grow for decades due to the apparent self serving meddling in other countries affairs. Our country has developed a reputation of using others while they serve a need, and throw them to the dogs when she has finished with them. Please do not think I am against America. I love my country and wish it could change. Unfortunately, America has followed the erroneous path of every great power. To date, no nation has survived the arrogance and righteousness that comes with unchecked power.

EDDDDD. Surely even the misguided and ill-informed such as yourself don't believe that number. You need to get your news from a more reliable source. Oh by the way...... That Nigerian Doctor who wants to wire you 30 Million Dollars is not a real doctor.

As long as there is more of the bad guys killed than the good guys, isn't that our main objective. Obviously, you are anti american and anti Israel, so sorry, you lose

both these wars are failing and they are wars that can not be won
and g.bush .blare. and john howard all need to be removed from office.
i can not kill a man without going to gaol unless its self defence
but one country can invade another and kill as many as they like.
all this will do is create more extremists with more ideas on blowing the west up.

Was that 654,500 terrorists and 500 civilians?
I'm sure that you're one of those people who count ,even the ones carrying guns, as "innocent civilians".
Does that thrill you to think people might come to hate America?
