It gets a bad rap because it's a dangerous organization that calls itself a "religion" to mask the fact that it's a business (and a vicious, ruthless one at that). The “church” harasses & bullies anyone who they deem an "enemy" (basically anyone who has anything negative to say about the "church"). It is also, despite what a few fanatical members may say, a CULT.

The founder is L. Ron Hubbard, the science FICTION writer who once told a friend that the best way to make lots of money is to start your own religion. Though being a very outspoken critic of psychiatric drugs, it was discovered upon Hubbard's death that the anti-anxiety drug hydroxyzine (Vistaril) was present in his body, which several of his assistants would later attest was only one of many psychiatric & pain medications Hubbard ingested over the years. Scientologists believe the evil alien ruler Xenu killed a lot of aliens (Thetans) from around the universe by bringing them to earth & blowing them up inside volcanoes. They believe the souls of these aliens (these souls are "Body Thetans") have attached themselves to us & cause many of our mental & physical ills. Members who know about Xenu will attempt to deny it or pretend like it doesn’t matter. They are required to sign a contract binding them to silence on the matter. Lower level members don’t know about Xenu & accordingly deny everything because they honestly don’t know.

To rid ourselves of "Body Thetans" & also “engrams” (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind) so that we can become “clear”, we have to go through "auditing" with a member of the “church” who uses an "e-meter" to measure our “reactive mind”...... & we have to pay lots & lots of money for “auditing” (purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 & $9,000 for advanced sessions) & to take courses on Scientology to advance to higher “levels” in the “church”. The “church” has also taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry & psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life. They deny the reality of chemical imbalance & profound mental disturbance & accordingly do NOTHING to effectively stabilize the dangerously unstable. The “church” has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results).

Scientology is an applied religious philosophy. When I say "applied" I mean you actually use it in your life to change or improve existing conditions. It is a very practical religion.
All religions if you learn about them have a basic philosphy, but they also have certain dogma, rituals and observances, and a certain faith or belief is required. The reason for the apparent "bad rap"
Back in the late 1940's L.Ron Hubbard was recovering from his WW II injuries as Commander of a convoy Atlantic escort vessel in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital. While there he conducted some experiments and began to apply his theories to the field of the mind with some of his fellow patients.
This was part of the research that resulted in his book
" Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health."
As a result of doing this he uncovered "mind control" experiements that the US government were conducting in the very same hospital with some of the patients. He was able to reverse the effects of these experiments. He would not co operate with or assit the US government , despite their attempts to make him, and discharged himself from the US Navy.
As a result he became a government target. Not only did he know what they were doing he also had developed technology that could undo their efforts to control people
He was also continuing with his research independantly without the government owning or controlling it. When he finally released Dianetics in 1950 to the general public and Dianetics
was in wide use and application in the US he basically became
the CIA's biggest headache ever!
It is an inteligence technique to accuse a person or organization of the very crime you doing and trying to hide. Especially when you are afraid of being exposed. Classic misdirection.
The battle has been long and hard with covert and overt attack in every country as false information about Scientology and Dianetics was spread through government files internationally via INTERPOL (now defunct).

Anyway, with the Freedom of Information Act's now law in most countries, thanks to the work of many Scientologists and their allies, government files on people and organizations can no longer remain secret. And the lies and false information can be cleaned up and removed.

But you will still find this false information being circulated via bogus websites,TV cartoons, etc . And the media love to create contraversy where there is none, especially with celebs.It will eventually fade out. The Internet can also be used by anyone to to spread false data as well as facts.
The real fight for religious freedom for Scientologists and for Scientology has been won, but like all things there is always a communication lag with society in general.

5. The Spirit creates his own emotions. Are you happy? Are you sad? Are you depress? Maybe you think that something external of you is creating your emotions. Maybe you believe that you are sad because you had a bad day or maybe you believe that you are happy because you had a great day. And this might be true. Happiness, exhilaration, depression and psychosis are states of mind, not diseases. All what you have to do to stop being depress is change your state of mind. How you do that? By changing your ideas and considerations. Scientology provides the tools to achieve a better state of mind in accordance with your own point of view.

10. Scientology is the only church that doesn't ask for donations from their parishioners during their Sunday Services. All chapel services are 100% free (marriages, naming ceremonies, ect). Scientology earns it's money by delivering courses and auditing. Courses and auditing are optional. You do not need to take courses and auditing to be in Scientology. All you need to do to be a Scientologist is to read the books and apply Scientology to your life (like I do). But if you want auditing there are many alternative and economical ways to achieve this.
a. You can do volunteer work in your local church and get your services for free.
b. You can study to be an auditor and perform all your auditing with a fellow student. This way you can also provide free services to your friends and family. This is actually the preferred way to become clear because you learn how to helps other. Scientology isn't about you going clear but taking responsibility across all your dynamics (self, family, group, humanity, life, ect).
