Use spikers (for hard hold) or J Crew for more mild hold. These can both be purchased at a local salon. These will not leave flakes. They smell good too.

if ur a guy....crew styling gel is really good its made speacially for men...and it smells really good....you can get it at any professional salon...=)

Aveda--Gel is good, all their products are good and are gentle on your hair, and they smell pretty good too.
