Reading some of these answers, I would say that he was short and couln't reach the buttons, but if I was him, I would get a wooden box and use it rather then walk up eight flights every day.. for a short person, that is rough..

In the 1950's people had electric and gas power, i.e. most people had electric/gas stoves and refrigerators. It was not common to have wood heating except in rustic cabins etc. A very few farms and excluded locations may have had outdoor plumbing. I'm not sure how common ice boxes were, but I'd guess fairly uncommon to rare, depending on the location.
