Don’t keep them out. Fix the tree so that it cannot fall and enjoy your little acrobats explore a new toy. It is very rewarding!!!

Forget the above answers: they would just as lieve install land mines or a booby-trap device around the tree. lol

You can't contain a cat.. No barrier is too high for a cat, the only thing that stops a cat is a closed door.. Do what we have been doing for years, put the non breakable decorations closer to the bottom of the tree, consider the under-tree decorations cat toys..sooner or later the cat tires of all these new adventures to get in to, and goes back to his normal life, Just accepting the tree..

Don't let him get near the christmas tree. For instance, put your' cat all the way on the opposite side of the house and make him stay there for about 2 days.

Get a spray bottle and every time you see the cat near the tree spray him with water. Turn the sprayer to stream and stay back from the cat when you spray him. He will associate the water with the tree and stay away. I broke 3 cats doing this and they stay away from the tree every year. You may need to remind him yearly but it will only take a few times to break him of this habit. Don't say or do anything when you spray him and he will think the tree did it. Worked for me. Good luck.

Whebn you are home, always know where your cat is, so you can get it before it gets to the tree. When you are out or when you go to sleep for the night, put the cat in a room with someone in the family for the night with the door shut so it can't get out until you get up in the morning.

Go to Walmart, or petco, and buy a cat/dog repellent. They hate it! Just spray it on the tree once every day, and trust me, it will keep kitty away. I have used it to keep my cat away from specific parts of the house.

Try this- put the tree on a table. Put it some place out of the cat's reach, but still pretty. You might even try to put a small shock gate around it and a shock collar on your cat.

You'll need to stick around your cat for a while for the message to sink in but:

Consistancy with a squirt gun works so great to train your cat to stop misbehaving.
