Look at his interests. What is he really interest in... look at his room. Does he have a favorite band, music, sports, robotics, reading, space, science, sexual, art, you.
Once you know what he is really interested in then do research online to find out about that thing. Then see if you can find something that he would never think of getting or that he doesn't know exists.
You don't have to buy it on Ebay, but ebay is a good place to type in a search for find things that people don't know exist on a subject or interest.
Then you can shop at your local store for that item.
A lot of people will send you notes back being mean telling you to give yourself, and while they are just trying to be mean they are a little correct. Guys to like the woman to give something to them in the way of their body. If you have not let him touch you in a naughty way then ALSO with your other gift give him a hand made gift certificate that says you will let him to that thing to you. He will like that but he will also love getting something that has to do with his interest.

Seriously, guys like things they can use. If he plays video games find one he might like. If he fixes things get him tools. Get him movie tickets so you can both go. If all else fails ask his friends or family.

I got my boyfriend a football piggybank as a gag gift and he got totally bumbed, so i guess stay away from piggybanks and gaggifts

I dont know how long you've been dating, but if its for a while then your probably know of something he wants you just cant remember! Think of things he has said he liked or wanted... If not then you can try i dunno cologne, his favorite dvd, clothes
And if all else fails there are always gift cards!
