As a frequent traveler, and an Italian, I would reccomend many places in Italy. You can never go wrong with Rome! You can be there for a year and not see everything, but stay there for a few days, and you will love it. Venice and Florence are also spectacular as well as Milan and Naples. My personal favorite is Abbruzzo...it is absolutley amazing. My family and my summer home is there and it is fun and beautiful. Although, I would not reccommend going to Italy alone. It might be a bit boring for you. Bring a family member or a friend!
As for places to visit...do NOT make a schedule for yourself or plan out your day ahead of time. You will NOT follow it a guarentee! You will just want to take it all in when you are there. Oh, and you walk everywhere, so renting a car is not nesessary. There are many bed and breakfasts in all of these places, and they are all pretty much great. Have fun...and I'll be there this summer too!

Well... There both really interesting and exciting places to visit. Both have great food, great culture, history etc. To be honest, it's not really possible to say where is better: they are both different yet similar in their own way. I recommend buying a guidebook (eg Lonely Planet) on each and having a look through to find somewhere that interests you more. You could go to both, or why not go the whole hog and do a European Tour: Fly to Frankfurt in Germany then cross the border in to france to Strasbourg then go down a bit to Geneva then back into France for some mountain experiences and then get the train into Milan. Then travel south to Rome (very hot in summer) and fly back home. Just an idea.

Some of the best places to visit in Italy are Sardinia, Pisa, and Venice. My favorite was Venice. It was a little busy, but it was worth it. Being around the water was nice and it never got to hot. Its just a wonderful place to visit.

Hi, I took a tour that took me to many places in Italy. Venice is fantastic and so unique. You can walk all over and not get lost. The bridges and canals, the vaporetti and gondolas so Italian!
I loves Sorrento on the coast and Capri with the Blue Grotto. There are many wonderful places to see. Rome was very good with the ancient ruins as well as the more recent buildings, like the Sistine Chapel. Sensational!

For our last 2 summer holidays my wife and I have been traveling troughout Apulia and have come to love this part of Italy very much.
If you have done the more 'touristic' places I would suggest Apulia or Calabria.
Here you find top seafood, claen beaches and nice peoples!
Here is a good site to start planning your trip:

Florence is a superb town to spend your holyday; see more with hotelbye . Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house a few of the greatest creative gifts in the world. The most used and crucial museum in Florence are: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello and the Accademia. Churches like: Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable artwork galleries. In Florence you may also start to see the substantial and various artwork selection housed in the Pitti Palace. The Palazzo Pitti (The Pitti Palace) is just a large 15th century palace situated on the calmer south bank of the Arno River. The palace was long time the residence of Florence's rulers until 1919, when it absolutely was passed to the Italian state, which transformed the palace in to a museum complex. In spite of their metamorphosis, from regal home to a state-owned community making, the palace still maintains the air and environment of a private collection in a great house.

we structured our trip around "road tripping." we rented an apartment/mini villa out in spoleto, umbria and had a rental car to get around. we visited rome, florence, mt. vesuvius, pompeii, grotte di frasassi, deruta, and other places found in the umbrian countryside. if you love ceramics, deruta is a must! i also strongly recommend florence. it was by far my favorite part of the trip. the whole city, open markets, food, sights, and people just made such a positive experience.

I just came back from there. If you are planning on staying in Rome at all....
Try the "Aurora Gardens Hotel". We had the best experience there. Not crazy expensive...the service was excellent. Easy access for the bus and metro.
