We have a 12 year old Lab(Lucy) who is shedding quite a bit right now. Granted we had a few days here in Indy that were above normal temps, but its back to normal now. Is this something that's harmless or is it something to be concerned about?

dogs blow coat twice a year. a trip to your local groomer should remedy the problem. if she is loosing chunks and there is skin showing, you should see your vet.

Hmmm - we have two golden retrievers. Lots of hair ! Not sure if this is typical, but ours shed both fall and spring, spring for obvious reasons ;-) but in the fall/early winter I think so they start to grow in a heavier winter coat. I don't know if this is scientifically correct but our oldest is 9 yrs old and it seems this has happened the last many years.

They're indoor dogs but we do take them out for lots of runs and walks in the winter weather - and they love to lie on the porch in the cold. Maybe this promotes the fur growth (and shedding) this time of year ? That or maybe the increase in heating inside might be harder on them ?

I'm no vet or breeder. Just sharing what we see here. I'd say the fallout is normal as long as a) your dog's skin looks good to you and (eg. not red, dry, scaly or itchy looking) b) you believe his behaviour is otherwise normal. Now, one thing, given her age, maybe she needs a seniors food, if she's not getting one already ?

Enjoy your girl ! Woof !

I would call the vet, before taking her in. I live in Fort Wayne, and my sis lives in INdy, so I know about the weather! It is a little unusual, and she could have a skin disease....but I would just call a vet and tell them what's going on, and they should, over the phone, be able to give you some things to look for before you bring her in! But I wouldn't wait!

Im in Kansas and my lab isnt shedding alot and its been pretty cold here so I would take her to the Vet. It may be a diet or health problem.

oh no nothing to be concerned about. It happens more then u realize but it's normal n nothing to be worried about.just brush him a bit more until u notice it cool down a bit. It's also good to do on a regular basis so it's not as bad when it's shedding time.
