Why didn't you think about all this BEFORE you got the dog?

A dog shouldn't be an impulse purchase...

For those of you who have taken in strays or rescued puppies from fires, I don't blame you for asking, but those who go out and buy dogs...how can you purchase an animal and ask questions later?

I'll bet most people can tell us more about their new vehicle and how to care for it then they can their new dog.

Sorry if I offend anyone. I just don't understand!

I have to admit, I, too, am guilty of asking stupid questions every now and then, but aren't we all? (except Tyke of course LOL) I know my doggie basics though....and then some.

For example...I would never go out and just get a horse. Although I've been riding my entire life and even had my own for a couple years. I was able to board her where there were people who could help me. In fact, they're the ones who gave her to me with the understanding that I am not knowledgeable enough to be on my own as a horse owner as far as health concerns go. Even today though, after having her, I still would not put a horse in my back yard. I simply don't know enough yet.

Why do people take this so lightly?

Isn't that the truth! No thought what so ever!

And then they call me and ask "why is my Sheltie nipping my kid's heels" or "why is my Terrier digging" or "why does my beagle bark so much" or "why is my Basset untrainable" or "why is my Rottie so protective" or "why is my JRT/PRT so wild".

One time I saw a family at the pet shop up the road trying to decide whether to get a Golden or a Basset. No help from the sales person, of course, so I explained the temperaments of the breeds and how different they are. It was as if they had no idea that temperments vary from breed to breed, and I think that might be common.

I agree with you 100%. But it is hard to compare a car with a living creature. All cars are made to work the same way, in every detail of the car. Of course some cars break down faster than others depending on the care and maintenance it is given. Canines are somewhat similar but different in many ways as well. Each Dog has it's own unique personality. I think people should research the basics of each breed and then make a choice on the type of dog they want. If you train your pet and properly discipline them, then people are able to enjoy their pets in a positive manner rather than creating a dangerous, vicious animal through abuse.

I completely agree! I admit, I have had to do some research on potty training, because the dog I have now, Java, wasn't trained like my other dogs, and she was a stray dumped off 2 1/2 month old pup. But I do understand that people buy dogs without knowing anything, and it urks me off. Dogs shouldn't be purchased anyways, no animal should with all the adoptions available. Your car analogy was perfect. You dont buy a new car without knowing everything you can possibly know first!

YES! You pinned it! I wish you could GET points for asking this question.

I can see asking questions about weird puppy stuff, but some things are just basic preparation.

How on this earth does anyone buy a puppy and then get home and say "gee, what does this thing eat?"

God bless folks who rescue and take in strays and are asking because they are saving a puppy and don't know what to do--best wishes to you all!

But are these other folks just hanging out at a mall and pick one up on impulse? Like a candy bar?

I do not understand it either.

I understand what you mean, but you have to realize that some people just aren't capable of planning ahead. Not saying that I don't, but I know that some of these people who post on here most DEFINITELY don't plan ahead.

Sometimes a cute, fuzzy face is more compelling than research, and the new "owners" need help deciding how best to care for their pet. At least they realize that they need help and ask for it instead of blindly giving their own form of treatment, or mistreatment, to their new animal.

I know it gets irritating, but some people really ARE ignorant, and they still mean well.

AMEN! Working in a vet clinic I have seen so many mistreated animals that people barely even care to treat, and it makes me so angry. Why do people get an animal and not give it shots and then wonder why it becomes deathly sick? Like you said if you inherit an animal and dont have a clue then ok, but if you cant properly take care of an animal then dont get one. They are like kids, they need shots, food, water, shelter, and if they get sick you need to take them to the vet, dont wait and hope it gets better, because the longer you wait the more expensive it will probably be to get it fixed. I dont understand either?
hope you feel better after getting that off your chest. I know I do.

Amen to that! Adopting a pet is intended to be a lifelong committment (for the life of the pet at least). They're not fashion accessories. I have two dogs and two cats, and I'll admit at times I want to pull my hair out, but I bite my lip and remind myself that they always offer, without question, unconditional love and affection.

Kudos to you for your statement.
