Yes for sure. I recommend you to do so. Long haul flight will stop over/transit, so you'll be convenience to bring it along with you in your hand bag in the cabin.

I rang Manchester Airport to find out what rules are being applied on carrying cameras and cam corders. You can carry as hand luggage, but you must put the batteries in the hold.

Yes you can - in the US they actually suggest that you do because of the screening machines used to check the checked luggage. Also your checked luggage gets tossed around quite a bit and you wouldn't want you camera broken when you arrive at your destination!

yes you can and should now the rules have been relaxed. That way you know it's safe. Not sure how valid your insurance would be if you put it in the hold and something happened to it

yes flight restrictions have been eased, only liquids are a security check, these must be only 100ml each and kept in a transparent sealed plastic bag and shown at security check.
This still must fit inside your one piece of hand luggage allowed
