Would it be safe to use a UK 13A fuse in a lamp plug which did contain a 3A fuse?
A slightly mundane question maybe, however on one side of the plug it says 3A, but on the other side it says 13 A (next to 250 V~).
If it doesn't work, why not?

The 13A means that the plug is rated up to 13 Amps. In a lamp it is likely that the cable is only rated at 3 or 5 Amps as a lamp only needs a fraction of an amp. This is why there was a 3A fuse in there. For best safety use a 3A fuse because that will protect better than a 13A which might carry on working while the cable melts.

If the 13A is on the power in side, and the 3A is on the wire into the house/apartment then it should be fine.

The fuse will blow if 3Amps are exceeded so it should be perfectly safe.

I can't imagine the fuse going in the other way... the out should always be lower than the in from a safety standpoint.

But if you're really concerned - read (if you can) the numbers on the old fuse.

Regardless, there is no reason that it shouldn't work, unless your input amperage exceeds 13 Amps.

The 13 A fuse is more than 4X the recommended fuse. If there is a problem it will not blow and protect the circuit from the overload; this could result in overheated wiring or the circuit shorting out somewhere else leading to a fire. Its your house and family, don't you think they are worth the effort to find the right fuse?

it should be fine, but i would suggest replacing it with the proper fuse as soon as possible.
