My Chihuahua is about 5 years old and weighs only 4lbs. She, like most Chihuahuas has a very big personality. She's dominant but still really sweet and not aggressive. I'd like to get a large dog (80-100lbs.). Are there any breeds that stand out as being good around very small dogs?

As long as you let the bigger dog know that your Chihuahua is in control you should be good. One of the vets I worked for had a 100 lb Rottweiler that could be backed off of his food by her 5 lb Dachsund puppy because she trained all of her dogs that She and her husband were #1 in the pack followed closely by the dacshunds, because they were the smallest. She did that so the bigger dogs thought of the smaller dogs as their pack leaders and she never had a problem. So I would recommend anytime your new dog acts aggressive or dominant to your Chi, you have to scold them and in most cases make them roll over on their back and expose their belly to show submission to your other dog. She sounds like she will let them know shes the boss anyway, so if she does let her and reprimand the other if they show any signs of dominance towards her. I know my golden Retriever mix is about the most submissive dog ever. She is even submissive to our neighbors puppies. I wouldnt get a breed like a German Shepard because they are high strung and mine is VERY dominant and has been in a few dog fights because of it. Good luck and if you want any more info you can email me.

A medium sized dog from a local animal shelter. You asked for good reasons why. Here they are. 1.) You'll save a life and free up much needed shelter space. 2.) You can find dogs that were taken care of in foster homes with other dogs. You'll already know if the dog is good with other dogs. 3.) The shelter will help you match a dog whose personality will fit with your nipping, protective chihuahua without causing fights. 4.) The foster home will know if the dog gets along well with people. 5.) You can find a dog that already knows basic commands. How much faster can training get than training that's already done? 6.) You can get a young dog, puppy, adult, senior, whatever age you want and you can get one that's already housebroken. 7.) If it doesn't work out, most shelters have a trial period to make sure the dog fits with your family. Try getting a breeder or pet shop to do that! 8.) If you really want a purebred, you can check out breed rescues and still get all of the above benefits. If you want a medium dog that generally gets along with other, smaller pets... you should look into the following breeds/breed mixes: Boxer (they should be medium, but many are over--bred and much larger than they should be) American Eskimo (there is a Toy, Miniature, and Standard version) Old English Sheepdog (They're much smaller than most people picture!) Labrador... it's a large breed, not a medium breed but most of them get along with just about any animal. And, believe it or not, Pit bulls. If you get one from a rescue, like I said before, they can tell you how they are with other animals. Some can't be in a home with other dogs and others LOVE other animals. The problem with dogs that get along with other dogs is that they usually love being with people too. NONE of the breeds I can think of that would fit your situation would be happy spending a lot of time outside and away from you.

I'd go down to your local shelter to look for big dog. They'll be able to tell you if the animal has any agression toward small animals. Also, if you want a Great Dane or something like that, find your local breed-specific rescue and ask them for a dog that is good with small animals.

Any dog that is good around kids and small things. I have 2 akitas and they do fine with other dogs, yet I do not advise bringing an akita into a house with anouther dog that is smaller. It could intimedate him or her (the akita) and make him or her (the akita) attack your dog. I would say a basset hound or beagle is on the top of my list. My cousin has a chihuahua named Bob and a Basset hound named Abby. They do great together. If hounds arent your type of dog go with a great dane or a weimmerwiner. I took care of Gunther my neigbor's weimerwiner (thats not how you spell it lol) and he did great on leash and with my sister's puppy. I hope you found this helpful

Most will, but I should warn you that your chi probably won't get along with them! I've seen a lot of large dogs get bad bites on the face from chis, and at 5 years, she's pretty set in her ways.

If you're determined, look for something with a passive personality, like labs, newfies, mastiffs, or great danes. They tend to do well with pets and small children and rarely respond to sudden attacks from small kids or dogs.

Most large breeds have absoulotley no issues with small dogs, The main factor with having one small puppy and one large one is that when they play the smaller breed could get seriously injured, Most large breeds are gental giants! ( =

-newfoundland
-saint bernard
-Great dane
-some siberian huskies
-lab
and so much more!

good luck !
