Gonna let you in on a secret my bartender ex-boyfriend taught me... when using mixers with strong flavors like tomoto juice, you don't need to use a premium vodka because you'll never taste it. Just use something drinkable (Absolut is fine) and you'll get a great drink. It's only if you're drinking vodka neat or on the rocks that you should worry about name brands.
Even then, the label may not mean a whole lot. They did a taste test on ABC a few years ago and showed that most people can't tell the difference between brands in a blind test. It just goes to show you that you don't need to spend a fortune.
Personally, I'm a Stoli girl.

do not use some thing with any personality or high quality--the most inexpensive you'll discover. The tomato juice will overpower the vodka so thoroughly that the style of vodka will not in any respect count. For an more desirable adventure, replace the tomato juice with Clamato to make a Ceaser. You get somewhat tangy zip that would have you ever desiring more beneficial.

do not use cheap vodka. it will make you sick! not joking!!!
Smirnoff, Grey Goose, and Absolut are good. Stay away from the flavored ones when making cocktails with complex flavors. For example: use Malibu Rum with Pineapple juice and you get a nice coconut flavor. Use Absolute A-Peach in a Bloody Mary and you get something funky!!!
here's a couple of recipes for you:
For YOU:
1 - 2 oz. vodka (depends on your personal taste)
5 oz. tomato juice
2/3 oz. fresh lemon juice
pinch celery salt
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
2 dashes Tabasco sauce
freshly cracked black pepper
For all your friends:
1 c. Vodka or to taste (Vodka may be added to individual drinks, if desired)
1 (6 oz.) can V-8 (or use plain tomato juice. It's less spicy.)
4 (10 oz.) cans Snap-E-Toms
2 oz. Lea & Perrin's sauce
2 oz. Pace Picante brand sauce
1/2 c. fresh lime juice (usually 2 1/2 to 3 limes)
1/2 tsp. celery salt
Several drops of Tabasco sauce to taste (optional)

Use a relatively inexpensive vodka since the Bloody Mary recipe will hide most of the flavor. And YES, you can taste a difference between vodka's when done straight. You could experiment with various flavored vodka's but I question whether you couldn't just create the same with what you add to your mix.
Concerning recipes, what tastes to you prefer? It's almost like making chili; everyone has their preferences. Start with the basics, add, substitute & delete what you like. Myself, I like 'em spicy but not fire-alarm hot.

The great thing with vodka is that you can use a cheaper vodka in mixed drinks because most people can't tell the difference anyway. In the case of a drink that does not have a lot of overpowering flavors then the more expensive vodkas should be used for their taste and smoothness to come through.

You won't be able to taste the Vodka... it doesn't matter (however, their is a russian vodka with a green label and all the writing is in russian that is pretty rank (crude)... don't use that one!)
If your making them from scratch... then find and grind the best tasting peppercorns !
The pepper is the strongest dictating taste, but, all the ingrediants are important.
If your just throwing an attempt at someone and hope the person will drink anything... Spicy V-8 might pull it off for them ...
Best wishes...

I would go Smirnoff or Grey Goose. But after you are done putting everything else in a bloody mary you really can't tell the difference between good and "bad" vodka.

It really depends on your preference, try a few and see what you like.
Personally, I have found Pearl Vodka is inexpensive and goes great in Bloody Mary's.
Other good brands are Grey Goose and Han (If you want to try a different, but fantastic taste.)

I like Absolut Peppar for that extra kick. And use a good thick bloody mary mix, like Red Eye, and a splash of green olive juice or dill pickle juice. And don't forget the salt on the rim!

The cheapest one you can find. The ingredients in a bloody mary are so strong the small differences in taste among the pricier brands would be wasted.
