Because many of these treasures will never be seen publicly again if they are sold privately. As it is now, the greatest paintings ever made can be seen by any plumber, mechanic or out of work salesman by going to a museum. If you sell them, they will go into private collections and never be seen again. Photographs of great paintings just dont do it. Nothing can replace an original.
As for the money raised, there are people right now who EARN the kind of money youre talking about. There are LOTS of billionaires out there. How about paying them smaller salaries and bonuses and using THAT money to improve lives rather than by selling off one of a kind masterpieces of art that belong to the world?
P.S. You took exception to my answer and sent me a long tirade via email, but YOUR email is conveniently DISABLED. I guess that shows us all exactly how prepared you are to hear opinions counter to your own.

$1 Billion and put all those monies into a cancer cure how can that not be a fantastic bargain??
I think is it a excellent idea.
But, regrettably persons who think as you, there are few ones in the world.
the men have created a false system of values,in which all the men believe, and no man will change.

DO YOU REALLY THINK IF THE MONA LISA WAS SOLD THAT ANY OF THOSE CANCER VICTUMS WOULD GET THE MONEY????????????????????
Grow Up and look realisticly and find a way to (show off) the Mona Lisa and make even more (perpetually) for the cancer cure.
That way the money is coming in steady and for as long as the painting is shown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not JUST a ONR time money maker thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it belongs to the museam, and they are there to protect it, they arent in the business of healing or fund raising, and the cost of the mona lisa could all just go down the drain trying to cure cancer, just like billions already have. dont be so stupid.

sounds like a good idea to me just as long as these paintings are kept in the public domain and are free to view. at the tate in london you had to pay to get into the top floor to see damien hirsts pickled animals or you could go to the national and see brilliant works by truly gifted artists such as rembrandt, van gogh, seurat, pissaro and many others for free. i went to the national.

You would lose the art musems and rich people would not be willing to do that. but I wonder what if you did that on the black market. Secretly switching the real artifacts and selling them to underground collectors?
