Is it wrong to have your friends remove muddy footwear before riding in your car for long drives? I am trying the mat things as well but they seem to work well for short drives. (like they get in for ten minuets or and then out) (when in comes to 3 plus hours of driving they are sitting in mud it would seem) I don't wanna be too much of a neat freak but I want my friends to be comfortable as well as keeping the car up. (also I want to be appropriate, is it or not?)

I don't think it is wrong, but I am wondering where you expect them to put their muddy footwear.

Maybe you could keep some plastic bags or something in the car and they could slip those on over the muddy boots?

I find car mats work well, though. When the mud is dry it's easy to shake the mud off.

apply same rules as you would with your house. stamp/wipe shoes before entry.
but like a house, ensure you have carpetted mats, so it doesn't matter whats on their shoes.
if you expect mud, then buy some $2 throwaway plastic sheeting or reusable $10 plastic mats before trip.
if its unexpected mud, then the carpetted mats will protect the car...thats what they're for. if you want to protect the mats (crazy as plastic over a couch), then improvise with some plastic bags or something.
if the mats get too bad, wash em afterwards or buy some $15 new ones.
shoes off in a car spells trouble for odor. :)

I understand where you are coming from but not sure you will keep your friends if the have to remove their footwear, you would be better not inviting them for a drive while wearing muddy footwear, how are they so muddy anyway, only take them out in good dry weather.

For a long car ride, ask them to bring a clean pair of shoes if they'd like.
I refuse to ride in a car barefoot for safety reasons, ever since I saw a crash where the floorboard ripped somebody's bare foot off it's ankle.

I would lay down some large paper. Then you can easily just throw it out when the trip is over. You dont wanna be smelling stinky feet for 3 hours do you?

It's not 'wrong,' but it's certainly awkward for you. But if they don't know to respect your property...
