Is there a traditional dish in the UK for New Year's Eve? Here in the US I'm making black-eyed peas because it's a southern tradition for good luck. I'd love to know if there are any other NYE traditional foods, in any country.

We normally have some type of pork (ham or pork roast), cooked greens (turnip, collard and mustard mixed together), black eyed peas and rice (hoppin john) and cornbread!!!! This is a pretty typical New Years Day meal in the southern United States.

Hi, Usa is the best place in the world for the total embrace of all cultures, and the acceptance of the choice to be different, I was born in Ireland, and you know we always were doing the finnish of all the Christmas Turkey being the main leftovers, and all those pies from apple to Christmas Pudding , but the New Year's eve is always preoccupied with the looking forward to the New Years Eve Party, and perhaps a New Years Eve Watchnight Service to see the New Year in, the Irish Cream and a hot toddie or two being available, also the hot Cider non and alcohol go down well in this slightly Baltic weather, sweet, pies are always well appreciated ,especially hot, Mr Kipling works well as a make believe home cooking, but through away all evidence of the packaging, welcome to Europe for Christmas.

Our Family Tradition for New Year's Eve/DAY foods is pork and sauerkraut. Sauerkraut because its gives you good luck for the new year. Thats what my family and I have every year.
HERE ARE SOME OTHER NEW YEAR'S Food TRADITIONS
Eating noodles at midnight is customary at Buddhist temples in Japan.
A German/Pennsylvania Dutch tradition is to eat pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Eve/Dayfor good luck.
It is the tradition of Bosnia & Croatia (both of former Yugoslavia) to eat what is called "Sarma" or beef wrapped tightly in cabbage to bring good luck in health and wealth for the upcoming year.
It is a Cuban tradition to eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight. The 12 grapes signify the last twelve months of the year.

Eating pickled herring as the first bite of the New Year brings good luck to those of Polish descent.
In the southern United States, it is believed eating black eyed peas on New Year's eve will bring luck for the coming year.

Black-eyed peas, fish, apples, and beets are eaten for luck at the Jewish New Year's celebration (not celebrated on Jan 1).

Everywhere I've lived, we've always had pizza for NYE. My family is from the south and none of them eat blackeyed peas on NYE so I wouldn't call that a tradition that everyone participates in.

I'd say copious amounts of liquor, but I don't think that counts as a food. :D Being a Virginia native (now transplanted to Georgia) we eat black eyes peas on New Year's Day for luck. When we were kids, my mom would have to hide *one* in our mashed potatoes to assure that we actually ate one. To this day, I still eat only one--they taste like dirt to me. LOL

In Japan, New Year's table every meal is symbolic. Christmas feast begins with the events of the main dish - buckwheat noodles with broth. Soba is a symbol of longevity, and longevity is the main wish for the New Year.
In the following holidays Japanese eat osechi-priori - a set of different seafood: there are fish nihon thai, and shrimp, herring roe, lobster, oysters, seaweed. All the above products are served either raw or steamed. By osechi priori-fed ozone soup with rice cakes. For dessert, the Japanese cook black soybeans symbolize health and mashed sweet potatoes and chestnuts - for luck. In the new year the Japanese prefer to drink green tea and rice vodka Mojo.
