What reason could God have for torturing people rather than just blinking them out of existence, or just NOT creating those he knew would end up there?

Well, apparently He planned for everyone to go to heaven, but one of the angels didn't like that idea and revolted from God. That angel (Lucifer) created hell, and convinces people to go there every day.

Hell as a place of physical torture was imagined by humans trying to fathom God's creation. God made people for love, so he had to allow freedom to love or not. Lack of love is a horrible torture; ask anybody who's experienced it!
We do not know exactly how things happen after death, but I have to assume that an omnipotent and omniscient God who made people for love, will work something out. He must have thought that free will was worth the trouble.

NO, a hell where people are tortured is not biblical, no matter what "want to be christians" tell you. The lake of fire in the bible signifies the 2nd death...after judgement. The lake of fire mean eternal destruction or death. The bible states that when you die, you don't have feelings or memory or thoughts. He doesn't want anyone to go to Hell. And hell isn't a permanent place. Hell will cease to exist. We have free will and can choose to follow Him or not. Too many people are to scared or selfish to admit there is a God and that they should serve Him. They'd rather deny Him and live a life they think will make them happy.

Uhm...obviously you have not read the Bible yourself. God NEVER mentioned the word 'hell' in there.
