Hip is not the same thing as cool. If you want to be "cool" you shouldn't refer to someone (or yourself) as "hip." Cool refers to the enitre way you live, dress, act, etc. Hip can refer to individual things that are trendy, not people.

no. ive always though of "cool" as a personality trait where as "hip" is more of an external trait, like the are wearing the "hippist" clothes. not like anyone says that anyways...

I'd say "hip" is "stylish with the confines of the latest trends" where as "cool" is "stylish regardless of the latest trends."

stylish referring to clothes, music, attitude, etc.
