Easy, because they are only thinking about themselves and never think about the consequences of their actions. It's that "Me first" attitude that is so prevalent that causes this problem. If we all just thought more cautiously about other people and the effect we can have on their lives it would be much easier to make that final decision about driving.

If there are on average 3000 killed or seriously injured because of drink. But there were 3201 fatalities and 28954 serious injuries in 2005 then why aren't police targeting sober people.
It is foolhardy to drink and drive because the risks of having a crash are increased but maybe the police should be clamping down on other aspects of driving like road awareness. How many people out there in YahooLand have been cut up, Tail-gated, didn't see someone themselves, or braked hard because of obstacles they should have seen. This would dramatically cut down accidents on the road.

Because it's the easier option to drive yourself home than having to bother for buses or taxis. I'm not agreeing with that, that's probably what drink drivers think! Some people may not be aware that it's not a good idea either, especially after having had a few. They probably don't consider that their life or someone else's may be at risk because of what they're doing.

Probably because they're selfish. They don't care about any other consequence other than getting caught.....which while under the influence they don't think will happen.
I personally feel that the governments advertising campaigns are wrong. They concentrate on people crashing cars and dying ....which of course is a reality, however, all the drunk driver cares about is him/herself getting caught. Perhaps if the adverts concentrated on the drunk driver getting caught and the subsequent knock on effect of his/her actions maybe, just maybe they'll sit up and take notice!

I think it's a case of "It'll never happen to me". Or just people thinking, "Well I don't feel drunk." When I was in the sixth form it was seen as a way of beating the system,as a lot of people get away with it, Drink driving stories went along side stories of avoiding speed cameras etc.

Because so many people think that 'this doesn't apply tro me'
Many, also, do not intend to be over the limit but are ignorant of the effect of even small amounts of alcohol.
Don't ask a man to drink and think.

Easy solution. Create a special tax the bars and use the money to provide free shuttle service home for anyone who requests it. Even though the cost of booze would go up the cost of insurance, fines, and legal fees would go way down. And the saving in human lives would be immeasurable.

They don't think they'll get caught.
A solution might be for cars to be fitted with a sensor which detects alcoholic breath, and won't start the motor if it's over a certain level.

I knew a guy back home and he was pulled over 4 times for drunk driving. It doesn't bother them when they are drunks. They don't think of anything else but drinking and trying to feel better. They don't think about getting in accidents and possibly killing themselves or someone else. Especially someone else's children. That would be a wake up call. Would you want to go to jail for killing someone's child? No way, not me.

People still drink and drive because the very nature of alcohol cause them to lose judgement. It's really quite simple. The buzz feels good, and so we keep drinking. Then we lose judgement, and decide that driving.....or drunk dialing to old lovers.....might be a good idea. But it isn't. Only our judgement is gone...so we don't know that.
