The word “jealous” is the same word often translated “zeal” or “zealous.” The word describes a passionate intensity to protect or defend something that is jeopardized. The word can also have the sense of “envy,” but in that case the object is out of bounds. God’s zeal or jealousy is to protect his people or his institutions or his honor. Yahweh’s honor is bound up with the life of his people.

According to "The Complete Word Study Dictionary" Old Testament:
This word in Hebrew is qanna; An adjective meaning jealous. This word comes from the verb qana, meaning to be jealous or zealous. In every instance of this word, it is used to describe the character of the Lord. He is a jealous God who will not tolerate the worship of other gods. (Ex. 20:5, Deut. 5:9)
This word is always used to describe God's attitude toward the worship of false gods, which arouses His jealousy and anger in judgment against the idol worshipers (Deut. 4:24, 6:15). So closely is this characteristic associated with God that His name is Jealous. (Ex 34:14)
