A week should be fine.
I recommend Ko-Samui on the east side of the country.

We flew to Krabi back a long while ago on a 3 month vacation. It's been a while, but we rented a motorcycle and drove from Phuket (we stayed at a national park there on the beach outside of Phuket) to Krabi which is the "jumping off point" for Koh Pi-Pi island.I'm almost sure that you can probably fly into Krabi now.Stay a few days @ Krabi enjoying it then make reservations to get a little 1 bedroom hut on Pi-Pi.
Krabi was "awesome" we got a place up from the beach for like $3-5 dollars a night.(This was at the beginning of the 1st gulf war). So,it's been a long time.
But there is alot to do around there like boat rides & the scenery is beautiful.Limestone mountains w/weird shapes that go on into the ocean.
We never made reservations cause the places listed were like a 5 star resort & we knew the prices in the surrounding countries were little or nothing.
Although we did not go to Pee-Pee island because of time restraints it really looked good.At that time you could get to one of the various islands there @ stay 3-4 nights for like $40 bucks (food included).
We went all over Thailand w/Chaing Mai being shoppers paradise. They had a "awesome market there.Where handmade items were really cheap.
So, I would fly with NO reservations made in advance to Krabi and rent like a 1 bdr. cabin maybe one blk. from the beach then go there to swim & eat & drink. We had a dinner on the beach w/drinks (alot of drinks) for like $7 bucks. So I know things haven't changed that much. You gotta know that most of the world lives on a couple of bucks a day(if there lucky). So Thailands a good food, great place outside the massive cities.I would try to stay at least 10 days ,7 days Krabi & Pee Pee island. Then fly to Chang Mai for 3 days.
Best of luck....
P.S. Pickup a "Lonely Planet book" on Thailand. They will have a good guestimake on prices and such.

Phuket is beautiful. Make sure you stay on the south end of the island since it is less crowded and more romantic. I stayed at Kata beach and I really enjoyed it. (I travelled in September). From Phuket you can easily take tours to tours to the beautiful Phang Nga Bay or cool snorkeling trips to Coral Island right off the coast of Phuket.

One week is long enough if you only plan on staying at one location. A good itinerary would be Bangkok 1-2 days and Phuket 5 nights.

A week is ok, depends on your available time, actually. Phuket will be crowded this time of the year. Head to Krabi or Phan-nga provinces just next to Phuket for more beach resorts and island resorts option. You should be able to get the transport from Phuket. Ask at the piers.

Those places will be quieter and better for your quiet times. If you like the croewd, then Phuket will be just fine.

phuket is nice if you really like a busy n burtling beach.. esp patong area...
spend 3-4 days in phukets, and rent a car, it is cheap and worth it. take 1 or 2 days trip to outlying island like phi-phi and krabi, etc and spend the remaining exploring phukets at days and night.
spend another 2-3 days in more remote islands. phi phi is obvious choice.. there are plenty of accomodation there from 5star to lowly budget hut. and while in phi phi spend more time on island hopping, beach hopping and snorkelling or just laying ard at the beach. that should cover it.
dont forget to taste the local thai food at sea hag.. forget the address but recommend it.
in fact we will be going there in jan07.
