B Bar in the Village is a sleek lounge and trendy 20-something crowd - tix for New Year's Eve are $40. Jalopy on Columbia St. in Brooklyn is also a funky spot for live music on New Year's. I found these at www.primeviste.com.

Most bars will charge well over $50 per person on New Year's Eve, even if you don't plan on staying there. It's impossible to bar hop in NYC now on New Year's Eve. You probably won't even be let in, unless you have a paid reservation. And once you're inside, you'll pretty much be stuck in that one venue. Your best bet would be to stay at home. Or spend a little more money and find a restaurant. Many restaurants have 2 seatings, and sometimes the first seating is cheaper.

Cheap in NY on New Years Eve?
Not in this lifetime.
Maybe walking through Central Park. (although not entirely safe)
Seriously NY City is one of the most expensive places in the US to live. It's not fair but many business take advantage of the fact that it is New Years Eve and charge higher prices.
Times Square and wathc the ball drop with Ryan Seacrest.
Good Luck and stay safe.

Jill, James and I never included watching this on TV. Some guests who came would want to watch it, but we were never interested. As for going to NY and being there for this event? No way! I'd rather stay the night in an igloo than to stand with thousands of people, shoulder to shoulder to watch a ball drop! Nope, not into huge crowds, in the freezing night air. That's not my kind of fun.

Usually I try to go to a private party first... then go out after midnight when the covers go down (or away in some cases).
Or, you could go divebar hopping in the East Village, Williamsburg, or the Lower East Side... could likely find several cool bars without covers there.
Timeout NY (the magazine) usually has good New Years ideas. You could also try newyork.citysearch.com.
Or, find some single 20-something NY guys to take you out! (contrary to popular belief, we are around...) :)

Why not watch the ball drop in Times Square? It wound't cost you anything and it's great fun!! Then afterwards you and your friends can go to McDonalds or buy hotdogs etc. from the vendors.
