I agree with the lowering of the doses. I was on an SSRI once and they have a tendency to give you SSRI discontinuation syndrome. Anyway, the darn little pill was smart already but I managed to break it up into 16 pieces with a pill cutter. I took one little piece each day and when I finally quit taking them, I still got sick but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Anyway, sorry about that. I would suggest calling around and just getting information and believe it or not, your local pharmacy will probably be willing to make some suggestions. My suggestion is to go buy a pill splitter for about 5.00 and then start cutting the pills in half and give him a half of a dose for about a week and then go down to a 1/4 of a dose for another week. You will have to keep breaking it down to an 1/8 and then even a 1/16 if you can. Once you take him off of it completely you could replace that little tiny piece of a pill with something else like a vitamin or a piece of tylenol and he'll never know and meanwhile it will be flushing totally out of his system so like a week later you tell him that it's over. I think that it could help psychologically to make that replacement. He's probably used to getting something everyday. Hope that makes plenty of sense.

I have heard horror stories of people trying to get off of methadone. I hear that it is a long process. The previous answerer has the right info. for you. I know its a step-down process, and do not stop cold turkey. I watched a show on this on HBO not too long ago. A documentary about 5 people they followed around, who were trying to kick methadone. I wish I could remember the name, oh, dang, I can't remember. Good luck, keep trying to get help for him. At least he has you to care about him.

The methodone clinic should give you information. If not go to the nearest mental health clinic. Or you can call drug hotlines in your area. You can go into detox from this drug as well as any others. Any emergency room can give you this information also.

Whereever you do end up going make sure they take him off slowly and steadily or there is risk of heart failure. It's a very slow process.
