Narcotic officers are recruited from seasoned officers/detectives with a minimum of at least 5 years experience, who have demonstrated street smarts, can blend in with the underworld culture, and able to think and act quickly on their feet. This is no job for amateurs.

Sounds to me that those answering this question have already been caught by a narcotics officer.

OK then...the answer is as follows:

1. Finish high school
2. College would be nice, at least 2 years
3. Join the local PD or State Police. The bad news is normally you have to pay your dues and learn the job [3-10 years] before you will get a chance to work narcotics, vice, etc.
4. Advice--join the biggest PD you can find so they will have a well staffed narco unit.
5. If your sights are higher you will need education to match your goals. FBI, DEA, NICE want 4 year degree + something else such as law degree, proficiency in a foreign language, CPA, law enforcement experience
6. MANY other agencies have drug units. Check around. The Coast Guard, Navy etc. have drug units, most State Bureaus of Investigation, the Federal Investigative Services, etc.

That's a start, good luck, attitude is a choice, from a 32 year cop who started in narco and ended up Chief.

Well, usually most peoplego to college or an accredited program to study criminal justice then go off the police academy. Others just go to the academy. After one gets a job on a police force, they have to work as a police officer for a few years before they can be promoted or recommeded for a higher position. Some eventually become detectives, others become homicide detectives, still others become narcotics officers and juvenile officers, others go off to college again and study forensics or CSI.

Here in Canada you need to become a police officer first. Once you are on the job for a while you can apply to the drug unit.
