I have a beagle puppy, she was found as a stray. I have no idea whether she was abandoned or ran away from home. I can tell you, she hasn't climbed anything, or even tried, but, she can jump like you wouldn't believe. The thing about beagles is they are scent hounds, if they catch a scent, they WILL follow it. If you are planning on keeping the puppy inside, you should be fine, just keep your eye on him/her when in a fenced yard. They are wonderful dogs, I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Just be prepared to keep a close eye on your baby, and it will be fine.

I don't know that beagles like to climb fences or that it is a breed characteristic, and from the messages from previous posters, it seems that it isn't necessarily a characteristic, but our neighbor left a beagle for us when she moved because the dog had several issues - one of them was climbing fences, although she hadn't had him fenced and we didn't know about that until we needed to find another home for him. I'd guess it depends on the dog. I'd think if you got a dog as a puppy and trained it to stay inside the fence you wouldn't have any problems though.

I myself have had 3 beagles over 25 years and not one of them climbed a fence. They may like to dig under fences if their nose catches something though.

well i have a three year old female and even the smallest baracade keeps her in, she is afraid to tempt her fate. However just remember, that as puppies, beagles are very mouthy dogs and really love to chew, more than the average dog. They are extremely hard to house train, it took me over a year of consistancy and strict training. But on the same note, beagles are wonderful companions and give you so much love. Mine is a perfect size to snuggle in my arms when napping and gives me sweet kisses when i need them....good luck

They do tend to wander around a bit, so it's important to make sure they are well contained. They are hounds, and following their nose is just what they do.
