Seroquel belongs to a class of anti-psychotics ("atypical") that are notorious for causing weight gain. They're discovering that they can cause a person to develop diabetes, too (in most cases, the diabetes goes away when the patient stops taking the drug).

There are other kinds of anti-psychotic medications that are less likely to cause sedation and weight gain. Geodon and Abilify are two of them. They aren't appropriate for everyone, though. They're contraindicated in people with heart problems (I took Abilify for a while, and my doctor ordered an EKG before I started). Also, they aren't as effective for certain symptoms as drugs like Seroquel and Zyprexa are.

You'd be much better off discussing this with the doctor who prescribed your Seroquel. Many psychiatrists recognize the importance of a patient's feelings about weight gain - primarily for reasons of compliance. If a person feels strongly about not wanting to gain weight, they aren't as likely to take the medication, which could result in a potentially-dangerous manifestation of symptoms. Doctors want to help. If you tell them you don't want to take anything that'll cause weight gain - especially if you tell them that it's for health reasons - they SHOULD be willing to adjust your medications if at all possible.

I'd also recommend that you seek information from a website like WebMD.com or NAMI.org. The answers you get there will be more accurate and, therefore, safer. Armchair doctors mean well, but when you're talking about your mental health, you really should get your advice from people who know what they're talking about.

Hey,

I've been going through the same thing for atleast 5 years and I am huge!!! Over the course of ten years of taking different meds I have put on 90 pounds. Seroquel does cause major carb and sweet cravings. I hate it, but it helps me to sleep and stay level headed (I've got bipolar). I'm going to try geodon and see if that works.

400mg??? What is your illness? I have bipolar disorder, and I take 125mg MAXIMUM per day. The weight gains I have had were the result of increased sluggishness from all the meds I take, not just one.

i do no longer think of that it particularly is a concern particularly because you lost weight.. it particularly is extremely no longer stable to learn a team of weight interior the begining, because technically the toddler is barely approximately 2oz suitable now... purely shop eating healthful and have self assurance me later you would be gaining weight because interior the final month the toddler places on a million/2 lb. a week.. Gaining to plenty weight at as quickly as would reason stretch marks so benefit it slowly and progressively.. stable success!
