need to stop running some programs to enable scandisk to finish folders one at a time...rookie here, never done this before...need step by step answer

whenever you are using a utility that needs access to the C: drive you really don't want to be using it. you want to reboot the computer , run the utility and let it finish, then resume your work or get back on the Internet...
you wan to do this if you are using scandisk and especially defrag

You should try to run scandisk in safe-mode. To get into safe- mode hold down F8 at Windows start up.

Hold down the crtl, alt and delete keys at the same time. This lists running programs. Using the appropruiate button in the window you just opened close the programs that you don't want running.
