Carcinoid is a rare tumor, that can arise in multiple areas of the body including appendix (most common), small intestine, rectum and lung. The treatment varies widely depending upon the size and location of the tumor.
It is often times found incidentally when the appendix is removed, and in those cases that is usually enough treatment.
In most cases surgical removal is the treatment of choice.
If the tumor has spread, people can get what is called carcinoid syndrome. Carcinoid tumors can make a variety of chemicals that either are hormones or behave as hormones and cause a variety of symptoms. Flushing, diarrhea and wheezing are some of the more common syndromes. In this instance there are medicines which can treat the symptoms.
Even when carcinoid has spread widely, many people can live for years with this cancer.
