I know what it is like to consistently not get any sleep. A decrease in mental abilities is the first symptom. You have trouble concentrating, you forget things easily, and, if you're like me, it seems like everyone is speaking a foreign language. The next symptom for me is I get clumsy and trip over things and run into doors and posts. Depression is also a problem because your tired brain doesn't have the resources to cover both basic thinking and not being depressed. Weight gain is a big problem, too.

If you aren't sleeping because of work or school, you really need to make sleep a priority. You'll do better in both. If you can't sleep because you just can't sleep, please see your doctor.

Difficulty in concentrating
Easily distracted
lethargic
blood shot eyes
always tired

Basically after a time your a wreck both mentally and physically.

The body needs a certain amount of sleep to "recharge the system" . Now the amount of sleep you actually have to get can be debate able.

I get about 4 to 6 hours of sleep, any more than that I'm just dead tired.

When I was younger, I used to go out clubbing get in about 2:30 AM and go to work at 6:30 AM with no problems.

Racoon eyes
Eye bags
Sleepy during daytime
Tired

As long as you get sleep, it should be enough to recharge your body. But the recommended amount is 5 hours minimum. I used to have that problem. I was an insomniac for quite some time and pair that with crystal meth and you will be awake for 3 days straight. I dropped drugs and took prescribed sleeping pills. I am now sleeping at least 5 hours a day.

I've read you will die faster from lack of sleep than lack of food... and you can get headaches, muscle pain, blurry vision, and its' pretty hard to think straight.... i only did it for about a week (except I got 4 hours of sleep) because we were on a missions trip and there was so much work to do. My sister's contacts got stuck to her eyes and it took forever to peel them off... it was so gross.
