i got into a car accident yesterday. my policy just started yesterday as well (i know i know). i have liability, my car was totaled, theirs has relatively minor damage compared to mine. their passenger went to the hospital. i was fine. i'm pretty sure it was my fault. so i know my car isn't going to get covered on this. my question is, i am getting a new car and i wanted to know if it was legal for the insurance company to drop me now or if they have to wait until the policy is up (which is 6/18). i already know my rate is going to go up so that is not my question.

also, i wasn't doing anything wrong, it just happened, it was at night and i swear i didn't see them. they must have had their lights on or something, and on top of that, their car was this weird color that's really easy to miss in the dark. the cop said it was the light, from switching to the green arrow to solid green, there is no transition (i.e. a yellow arrow), it just does it by itself. there are accidents all the time he said.

Progressive cannot cancel you on the date the accident happened. You had insurance that day, and if they cancel you the same day, it would show that you had no insurance. That is not plausible, so no, they cannot do that. Furthermore, they cannot cancel your policy without providing you with at least 10 days notice of cancellation. Or at least, that's how it is with the company I work for. Unless you already have a bad driving record or past claims frequency, they shouldn't cancel you anyway. However, they can jack up your rates, but you already know that.

When you buy a new vehicle, have your agent transfer the coverage from the old vehicle to the new one. Or if it is going to be awhile before you buy a new car, go ahead and cancel your current policy for the day AFTER the accident. Then go back when you are ready to get a new car and start a new policy.

Your car will not be covered, but your policy will pay for damages to the other person's car, and it will pay for any medical bills for passengers of that vehicle. So yeah, be prepared for a major rate hike. Oh and the guy that said "if you didn't get a ticket you aren't at fault", is dead wrong. The insurance company will determine who is at fault whether a ticket was issued or not.

Sorry that happened to you. Hope this helped.

If you have an "occurrence" within the first 60 days of a policy, in most states, the insurance co can drop you. You will still have coverage for the accident but you may get a letter saying that you are being dropped. As for the guy that said they wouldnt drop you because they wont to recoup their costs... He is wrong. From an underwriting standpoint. A company will usually drop a person and cut their losses rather than keep them and hope they dont have another accident.
They wont necessarily drop you though. Progressive deals more with higher risk drivers so you may still be ok.. espeicially if you have good credit and this was your only accident in the past 4 years.

You must see the coverage internet site of your state, get a mobilephone quantity, mobilephone them up and spot how and if you'll self insure, in a few areas you will not must be wealthy on the grounds that insurers themselves most effective quilt you as much as $15.000 that is a ridiculously low amount of money. RE: What makes automobile coverage automobile coverage? I continually questioned. Not to gloat or whatever, however my household is so wealthy that we particularly don't want automobile coverage. If some thing have been to occur we might be in a position to handle it. So well-nigh we waste 1000's of bucks each and every yr on automobile coverage. Is there some way we would have our possess coverage card to hindrance to a police? What makes automobile coverage firms in a position to role and no longer me?

if u only have liability, fault or no-fault, insurance wont pay to get ur's fixed. only the driver u hit, and the passenger of the other car's medical bills would be paid. if the cop didnt give u a ticket, then ur not at fault, and u didnt say whether or not u got cited. most generally, if ur not at fault, but the other driver is, the other driver pays for both. if u only wrecked ur car, the insurance wont pay anything...fault or no-fault.

Every company has it's own guidelines and they can cancel you anytime they like. Most likely they will only raise your rates through the roof this time. If you have more accidents, they will non-renew your policy.

Why would they want to drop you? They are going to pay out a good deal of money on your behalf and they want to recoup some of that through the high rates that they plan to charge you on your new car. You're going to pay someone those higher rates, and they would like to be the one who gets it.

It's possible they will non-renew your policy when the expiration date comes up, but not probable that you will be cancelled before then. If you don't get canned your premium will go up, as you've indicated you're aware.
