emo is a style

The term emo was used almost exclusively to describe the genre of music that spawned from the 1980s DC scene and the bands inspired by it; however, during the late 1990s, as emo music began to emerge into popular consciousness, the term began to be used as a broader reference than its prior music denotation.

The origin of the word emo itself is unclear. In a 1985 interview by Rites of Spring in Flipside, members of the band noted that some of their fans in DC were starting to call them "emo," arguably because of the state of emotion that the band displayed during their shows. In later years, the word emo was viewed as a contraction of "emotional hardcore" or "emocore," which was the popular designation of the music genre.

A younger contingent argues that emo is a contraction for "emotive hardcore;" however, no primary source demonstrates the use of that term prior to the mid-1990s. Meanwhile, numerous sources cite the use of "emotional hardcore," dating back to the mid-to-late 1980s.

In recent years, as its use has come to define more than just the music, the word emo has often been viewed as short for "emotional."

Emo is short for emotional. Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock. The name was applied to hardcore punk rock bands who distinguished themselves from their peers by adding an emotional component to their music, dealing with sadness and love and angst in their lyrics. The music was also characterized by particularly dramatic vocals which, at best, left the audience in an emotionally charged state, crying or screaming. These days, emo has been popularized and sent into the mainstream through bands like Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and Saves the Day.
Emo dress is characterized as distinctly non-fashionable, keeping with the movement's theme of showing little to no interest in all aspects of society. Emo individuals perceive themselves to be outcasts and dress accordingly so as to avoid any appearance of attempting conformity and falling short. Emos usually wear black, lots of jewelry, horn-rimmed glasses, many piercings, and tight pants and shirts.

Lately, labeling someone as "emo" means they are "overly emotional" or "melodramatic." The implication is that they are excessively moody and angsty, prone to crying jags and plagued by a love of bad poetry. But for those who call themselves emo, the term means something more pure. At its core, emo is all about being upfront with your emotions. Or, as one "expert" defined it, "emo is like being Goth, but much less dark, much more Harry Potter."

okay, some people gave answers that are no where close to being true. Emo, is a type of music that consists of people complaining, crying, and suicidal messages. It also describes a person that: cryes alot, thinks everyone hates them, wears black, cuts, wears studded belts, listens to Hawthorne Heights, is suicidal, makes out with those of the same sex.
