If you're not from the south, the answer is "reconstruction," but the actual reconstruction came somewhat later, as the Reconstruction period looked a lot more like a continuation of the war by other means in the former Confederacy.

The period was called Reconstruction. The victorious north occupied the south for several years. Whites who served in the Confederacy were disenfranchised and the vote was given to the newly freed ex-slaves. In a classic example, the ex-slaves who had been on the bottom, took advantage of their new position to abuse their former masters, or whites in general.

When Reconstruction was over, the southern states enacted the "jim crow" laws to retaliate against the blacks who had treated them badly under reconstruction.

This was the basis for segregation in the old south.

Radical Reconstruction. The Republican Federal Government wanted to make the South pay for seceding from the Union, but Lincoln wanted to let the South come back any with hardly and friction...but then he was assassinated and the Radical Republicans had their way...
