No. All those AOL CDs that come in the mail take up a lot of space in land fills.

Yes.

CD's (DVD's too) are made of polycarbonate. The optical layer is usually either a fine dusting of aluminum (as with most store-bought, read-only CD's) or some organic dye (in the case of write-once or rewritable CD's for burning). Very recyclable.

Note that if the disc in question is a data CD you burned yourself, you may want to cut or shred the disc if you're concerned about any sensitive information that might be on it, but it recycles just as easy.

Try this at home: toss a CD or DVD in the dishwasher. You will be left with a perfectly clear disk and a wad of metalized film when the cycle finishes. That's all that there is. The label is usually printed directly on the back side of the metallic foil that is pitted to record information.

You can find the nearest place to take them with Earth 911's locator at http://www.earth911.org.

No cd are not to put in the recycle bin. But you can have fun with them. Try putting one with the shiny side down for 4 seconds in the microwave oven. You'll see a funny light display. Totally harmless.
