Over the weekend I bought a few bottles of wine and without thinking placed them all in the fridge. My intention was not to drink them all soon.

Is it an option to take them out or will they go bad?
How long will they last in the fridge.

Some are red wines some are white...

I know this is stupid....push comes to shove it will be a tipsy Christmas

thanks for any help

thanks for all the help..very helpful...but just to clearify.

I should take the reds out forsure.
Leave in whites that I will be consuming soon.
And its ok to take out the whites I would like to store.

Store all on sides. (why is that?)

(I just know that beer gets nasty when its warm then cold then warm--wasnt sure if that applied here.)

Generally, red wine tastes better at room temp. You can remove them from the fridge with no ill-effect. Leave the white in (that tastes better cold).

Additional answer(s):

Wines are stored on the side to keep the cork moistened - that will ensure that it keeps a tight seal and doesn't let air into the bottle (air is the sworn enemy of wine). If you're going to drink the wine soon (within the next few months) and your place isn't dry like a desert, you can safely store your wine upright. Don't let wine snobs make you feel like an idiot!

Wine doesn't skunk like beer. So, taking it in and out of the fridge should have no effect on the flavor.

Cooling wine makes no difference to the quality. Once the wine is opened it should be consumed withing two or three days although if re-corked or in a screw cap bottle should last longer.

Take the reds out and let them get to room temperature. There is no need to open them in advance to 'breathe'. That's an old fallacy. Leave the whites chilled although perhaps take a couple out as not everyone likes chilled wine. Don't serve with ice. That's a sure spoiler for good wine. It just makes it cold and diluted.

Any unopened bottles will last indefinitely and most wines improve with age although some, like Beaujolais for example, do not and should be drunk young.

Leave the whites alone, they're fine. Drink them within a year at most. The reds can be left alone or stored at room temp. I like to chill a red to 55 Degrees, open and decant to room temp while it "breathes". If you don not "turn" the reds during storage, no matter what the storing temp is, you will notice a collection of "crystals" that begin coagulate in the bottle. This is not good for the wine. I think this is the sugars in the wine collecting and will adversely affect the taste of the wine.

Bah, terrible. Where are the true afficionados on this one?

Technically, all wines should be stored on their sides (not upright) at a cool room temp.

Your white wines should be chilled before drinking.

Your red wines should be served at a cool room temperature.

Whites and most reds will last 3-4 years unopened. SOME reds will last much longer (depending on type/quality).

Granted, you've already put them in the fridge, i would remove the reds and store them on a wine rack. The whites I would leave in the fridge (why make em warm and cool em off again) but I would store them on their sides, if at all possible.

As long as they are sealed wine will last pretty much forever. Take them out but store on their side in a cool dark place a coat closet that is inside with no exterior wall works well. Don't worry about the brief chill it won't hurt them at all. Do keep any whites you will be enjoying for meals readily available by leaving them chilling a nice crisp white is so lovely with salads, appetizers, fish and poultry. Some reds like Zinfandel an Pinot Noir are very nice cold as well. It is a matter of personal taste and experience.

As long as they're not high-end dollar wines, leave the whites in and take the reds out. They'll be fine. A little chilling shouldn't hurt the reds, since they were meant to be drank at a cooler temp anyway, instead of our room temp.

I would take the reds out of the fridge, they are usually served at room temperature. And don't think you have to hurry to drink them all, they last awhile unopened.

They won't go bad, but leave them in the fridge so that they don't sour. They will last for a year or more without being opened in the fridge. I opened one on Thanksgiving that had been in since last year and it was fine.

They will be fine as long as they do not freeze.
