I use Tiger Direct a lot for parts (www.tigerdirect.com). It has a very large selection. I also use it to price compare. Newegg.com has good deals sometimes also. A good way to find really cheap parts is using www.pricewatch.com, you can often get really good deals through it that sites don't advertise if you go to them directly (you need to know what you are looking for to use the site effectively however).

The best place is your current computer manufacturer's website. There you will be able to find manuals specific to the system you have. They will have details ranging from opening the case, to removing and replacing individual components such as the hard disk drive, or memory.

To check it over, see how it compares to other people's computers, flag up problems, and suggest how to improve it, I recommend this site: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/

To buy the upgrade parts, I suggest:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk (UK site)
or
http://www.newegg.com (US Site).

There's a few more sites listed in a sticky topic on the "Custom PCs, case mods, overclocking" section on the PC Pitstop forums @ http://forums.pcpitstop.com
