Now I have these answers I will tell you that I am happily married and I love my wife dearly. I asked the question because I am deeply distressed that some people think you have to be a Christian to love. It worries me that such narrow minded thought exists in the modern world.

Isn't that a question you should answer? It's not like you lose your emotions by not believeing in God.

a certain type of love maybe...
two texts to prove this?
Galatians 5:22 "Gut the Fruit of the Spirit is LOVE,, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (vs23) gentleness and self control. Against such there is no law."
If you have ANY of these qualities in you it is because GOD put them there through His Holy Spirit.
and the second text is:
1 John 4:7 & 8 " Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God for God IS LOVE."

Of course, love is an emotion. It has nothing to do with belief or reason, rationality or right or wrong. Love is a reaction. We can love things that are good for us, but also things that are very bad for us. Which is why feelings cannot be used as a barometer for truth.

The fact that you are an atheist should have no impact on your ability to love or be loved. There are some couples that feel that God strengthens their bond, however, there are PLENTY of couples who love each other very deeply and disagree on issues about God and the afterlife. I think that finding someone who respects you for your beliefs and can understand and appreciate why you have those beliefs would be the right person for you. Everyone deserves love!

Yes. You are made in the image of God whether you believe in Him, or not. God is love, and so you are certainly capable of it. The kind of unconditional love that God gives us can only be understood and given away with His help. So that level of love may be out of reach until you realize how much YOU are loved by God.

You may profess to be an Athiest, but you obviously have not bothered to look up the definition. Atheism has nothing to do with being in love. God Bless You and your loved ones.

Absolutely. Love is a personal emotion and attachment that does not require the belief in a superior being.

Not knowing you, I would guess that yes, you are capable of love. I believe everybody loves something. Hey, some people even love to be to be miserable. They're not happy unless they have something to complain about, lol. Those who don't love God will love some of their fellow human beings (Christians are taught to love even their enemies...that can be hard), they can love money, they can love chocolate, etc, etc.

Religion has no relationship to love. It's a human capacity (or incapacity!), part of our nature and environment.

The only connection to a belief in God is that Jesus taught us to love our neighbour as ourselves. Through Christian (and other) belief systems we are taught more about forgiveness and encouraged to love more than what might come naturally to us as humans.

Yes. I don't think the fact that you are an atheist makes you incapable of love.
