In comparison to New York City, Calgary is tiny, therefor it is in my opinion that it has less cultural diversification. Calgary, however, is one of my favorite cities in Canada. If you want a Canadian experience Calgary is the place to be, a booming economy, close to the mountains, lots to do, and the people there are great!
As for transportation, I think Calgary is easier to get around in than New York. It has a relatively small downtown core, and a good public transit system.
I am unsure if you are planning to move there or to visit? My opinion for living location is definately Calgary, IF you can actually find a place to live, as they are experiencing a major housing shortage due to incredible growth, though I am unaware if NYC is much better.
If you are visiting, I think NYC is a better choice, as I have heard its an experience unlike anything else. I am, however, biased, as I am in Calgary all the time so travelling to the mountains, and seeing what Calgary has to offer, is no longer that special to me.
