Yes, it's depressing that you ask a serious question, hoping that someone out there will be able to further your knowledge, and you get a load of answers that are either from nutters, from people who kindly tell you you're a nutter, or are completely irrelevant. What gets me the most is when you see a question obviously aimed at Christians and you get the Dawkinsians muscling in. Why can't they just leave it alone?

I've 'met' a few people who I'm in touch with, but I've just about given up on trying to get answers to spiritual questions here. Maybe, as someone said, it's because the schools have broken up now, and we'll be able to have some mind-expanding thoughts here again in January.

That very much depends on what you class as:

a) Proper
b) Adult
c) Healthy

as regards debating religion.

Do you have a particular view you would like to support or denounce? Do you have reliable, verifiable, independant evidence to back up your statement(s) to support/refute this particular viewpoint?

If so, pose the question, ignore the ignorant responses (I suspect you will be able to discern which ones they are) and start a debate.

I wish you the best of luck.

This is an easy question. Its because of the mentality of the religious nuts - if you're whole belief system what would be the point in making reasoned statement backed up by evidence? They value ignorance or 'faith' which is a way to maintain their ignorance. I haven't been on here long so I dont remember the times before the no-brainers.

on http://groups.google.com/ you can have adult conversation without certain religious types highlighting your Q and A's as "offensive"

Just like Galileo - who highligted the fact that the bible was wrong (yes WRONG!) about the fact that the earth is NOT in the center of the universe... they decided to put him under house arrest for the rest of his life. They didn't like the fact that he was exposing their fake holy book as totally inaccuarate.

With the advent of the internet, people can can say whatever they like about religion - particularly exposing all the non-sense in the buybull....

so try Google Groups... there are plenty of brainwashed zombees, but if you write something they dont like it will not get removed unlike Yahoo! answers. All the best

Christ the Fraud.

You are absolutely right. To be honest I think it depends on the day. I have been able to learn some new things on here but today it seems like the board is full of trolls. School is out for Christmas...that should explain all the silliness.

I've never met an actual believer, in a regimented faith, that could debate their belief in god in an intelligent and/or respectful manner.

The reason for this is because they are clearly wrong. And it takes 5 minutes of debate to show this. But then it becomes a game of semantics, as they try to twist and slither around the obvious. Eventually it turns to name-calling, and insulting the source of the facts that they cannot refute, etc.

In the end, they say "I have my faith, and you do not"

That's the way it works. And I'm beginning to think that there is no solution, other than to simply hope that these people die off, and their children will be better educated.

There are tens of thousands of them....but no one of The True Christian Faith is interested in "debateing" "religion" with a non-believer... The Faith is not a "religion" And The Truth is not "debateable".... while there are debatable issues within The Faith they do not concern the non-believer. But there are plenty of "religions" out there and lots of "debates"

Yes, it falls short of the glory of intelligent debate sites...
The internet is where idiots come to talk. Who's to say you're any smarter than the rest of us?
If it bothers you so much, stop coming on here. Problem solved.

Your right, Y! A gives credence to the statement that people will believe anything, no matter how ridiculous, because they want to believe it is true or they are afraid that it might be true. If you have questions about God e-mail me and I will share my perspective and what I have learned with you.
