Every time they appear to somebody in the Bible, it seems to be the first thing thay say, even to people who know they exist. Why do you think it might be necessary?

Because all those who have seen them are terrified. Why? Perhaps they realize how insignificant we are when face to face with angels, and God Himself.

I'm so glad they do say "Do not be afraid..."

This was part of my Sunday School lesson last week - think of it - the shepherds were in the field at night, they way they were night after night for most of their lives. Suddenly, the whole sky lit up and a host of angels appeared and one of them was going to give them some news and instructions. Don't you think "Don't be afraid" would be an appropriate thing to say?

Angels can just appear in front of you at any time. I think I'd be afraid. Also if they appeared in thier heavenly beauty, I mean wow, I might be scared because I'm sinful and they're not. They live in God's presence, they know everything about me.

Yes, the presence of God is like you are dead, a person cannot stand in presence of God. You do feel low and unworthy. And you can feel the presence of the Power of God with these Angels. You could even assume you have died, and are in another place other than earth which would bring up many fearful questions. Here is an example of John doing this before Jesus; Revelation 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Now even Isaiah told how he felt in this great presence of Heavenly creatures; Isaiah 6:5Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
6Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
No angels do not have wings, this is a myth and not from the Bible. Wings are symbols of power that the person has just like horns on a man is a symbol of power not evil. Michael Angelio's statue of Moses had two horns on his head. But here is the only reference to wings on a heavenly person and these are not angels; but women the Bible says; Zechariah 5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

Because angels and any Heavenly being might be a little freaky and scary if it's your first time in witnessing them. Think about it. No one really knows what they look like; what if they had flaming swords and plates of armor with the words "IN THE NAME OF THE LORD" on them? All those little naked cupids, I think, are totally unrealistic.

There was a belief in that time that, if you saw an angel, you would not live to tell others. In other words, seeing an angel immediately preceded death.

hello, a great bright light shines down on them, and this being, comes down from the sky and talks to them

if u lived thousands of years ago and saw this wouldnt this freak u out?

it freaks out people today. they call them aliens. read the stories of the angels who appeared to people, and then go read stories of people who see aliens or get abducted. they have quite a few similarities.

Because they know the angels come from God. They get just a glimpse of God's holiness and glory and it is an overwhelming feeling. Mark185 is right.

Because a large, superhuman figure approaching you out of the blue may be a little scary and unexpected sometimes.
