God in the Bible is depicted as jealous, vindictive, cruel, etc. (the list would go on too long...) Why would anybody WANT such a God to be real, and if He is, why would you actually be willing to WORSHIP Him?!? The Spanish who conquered the Aztec empire were flabbergasted that the Aztecs would volutarilly worship such barbaric deities, and I for my part am equally at a loss why people would choose to worship YHVH (Jehovah)? Is it all about Heaven? You would give up your human decency and watch your fellow human beings roast in Hell, just as long as YOU get to enjoy paradise...? I can't fathom it...

The bible teaches that hell is not hot, and no one is tortured forever. Jehovah's Witnesses believe in hell, as the term is actually used in the bible. The bible teaches that "hell" is *NOT* a fiery place of torture, but is actually the common grave of mankind.
There is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.

I've given it some thought and this is what I came up with: it could be about anxiety and control. Strangely enough, some of the most anxious people I have met are followers of the strictest religions (in addition to the above, Vaishnavas - Hare Krishnas, they have punishments that make Christianity seem like kindergarten). It would be reasonable to assume that if I were fearful by nature I would try to steer clear from such additional stress. But apparently, as those sects also have very strict rules then, by complying with those rules, they have at least a feeling that they are in control of their lives. Break a rule and you will burn in hell but at least you know it was your own doing. Sounds weird but I believe this could be it.

You have every single fact wrong - probably because there are so may flakey, biblical illiterate tv "christians" who peddle tripe instead of what Gods Word really says. Yes, God does have emotions - we were created in the image of God and the angels - you have emotions, don't you? Do you think God is cruel because he intends to destroy all the rudiments from the Earth? I think its great - I know you hear "oh, no God is a God of love, love, love" but thats rediculous - He states a whole lot of types of people and actions that he absolutely hates. He's coming back with a rod of iron for correction - this world is ripe and ready for it, too. As far as "hell" goes, The Bible does not say that there we will be celebrating in Heaven, and we can look over and see old Uncle Henry burning like a piece of bacon, screaming and begging for mercy - whats wrong with that picture? everything.
What God's Word DOES say, is that those who don't make it will be "blotted out" - they will go into the lake of fire and their smoke will rise up forever and ever (just the smoke- they'll be gone). After that, there is no lake of fire, and the memories of those who perish will be blotted out as well, so there will be no tears for them. If you read the Bible with understanding, you will see that where he is cruel, or jealous, there is a reason for it. If you have a child who you find out has been molested by a neighbor, would you just simply love that neighbor with a Godly love? If so, are you crazy? Well God is a God of love, but wrong is wrong, and its silly for you to think that God would just overlook all the terrible crap going on, just let it slide, and thats it - hey don't expect that, cause he's coming back to judge, and when he does, we are going into the eternity, and I for one do not want to have a repeat of what we have on Earth today - no - we're getting rid of the junk so that the eternity be able to exist in love and safety, etc. God is showing his love for his children by doing that.

God is the only real true god. There is no other gods. He was only jealous and cruel to those who worshiped idols(fake gods).
He is a God of love which spoke everything into existence. It's your choice if you go to hell or not. Noone can make that decision for you. Repent of your sins, believe in him & try to live for him and you will go to heaven. It's that simple. It's a free gift he offers to everyone if they will just take it. If I am wrong I have nothing to lose, but if you are wrong you have everything to lose.

what we glorify in our deities is what we would allow ourselves. folks who worship a cruel vengeful little desert deity simply find the god's attributes appealing and would want such guiltless powers for themselves were they allowed. they're not allowed so they have an all powerful wantonly destructive fantasy character that serves to satisfy their cruel desires.
i consider the type of deity a person worships a reflection of character.

No it's not all about heaven God may have punished people in the Bible but He is also a loving, gracious, merciful,..... God. He gave his only son for us, we don't want Him to be real, God is real and i will worship Him.

the reason the old testament god is "jealous, cruel, etc" is becaues of mans' SIN! sodom and gomorha were filled with immoral acts and behavior, so God destroyed the city. the flood was also becuase the world was filled with WICKEDNESS, so god had to "repopulate" the world in order to get better people. God is justified in everything he does as punishment for mans SIN> god is always willing to forgive and be loving to us, but we choose to live in SIN, so we deserve what we get>
