I while back I took care of many Macaws, One being a blue Hycnith. I really thought it had a great personality. I know they are an expensive bird. What is a bird with great personality? And not sooo expensive.

It would not be locked in a cage. It will be free to roam.

IT really depends on your circumstances. First of all, you say that your bird will be "free to roam" but birds really need a cage..to sleep in..to be in when you are not home, etc. Leaving a bird out while you are gone could be very dangerous to your bird, as they love to chew and electrical cords and poisonous plants, etc will be seen as fun to them. You want a cage that is big enough that they have plenty of roon, with plenty of toys, etc. If you live in a small space, I would reccommend a small bird. You also need to consider that your parrots, such as the macaws, cokatoos, and african greys ( like mine) live a LONG time. This is a LIFETIME committment! They require a lot of attention, a lot of stimulation with different toys and a healthy diet ( NOT A SEED DIET!) I think you should start small and go from there. I also have a parrotlet. He is very sweet, very small, can talk some and isn't near as much work as my african grey. You also need to think of cleanliness. My grey is very messy...poops alot..loves to throw his food and then say OH OH! He is out of his cage when I am hone and he loves to chase my other animals and kids too. He is like having another child.
Do your research and decide what bird is right for YOU. Don't make a quick, rash decesion based on a small amount of time spent with someone else's birds.
HTH Good luck to you!

Pet birds need to be in their cages while you're out as someone else has stated. Birds are expensive to care for if they're a budgie or a hyacinth macaw because even a budgie can get cancer and cost you $800.00 in vet bills to diagnose - trust me I know this from experience. Pet birds have wonderful personalities and are smarter than dogs and cats combined. They have the intelligence level of a 2-5 year old human. Thus need stimulation and tons of your time! I grew up with both cats and dogs so I can speak from experience. You must find a bird which choses you and then work with it every day for at least 30 minutes taking breaks for the bird to eat and drink at least once in that 30 minutes.
There are many websites about bird behavior and training. You'll want to purchase a hand fed baby not one from a pet store as it'll be tamer and supporting pet stores isn't something people should support.(IMHO) There are many breeders out there. Price depends on where you live. In Canada our medium birds are about the same price as large ones in the USA as there are more breeders in the US. I have two lovebirds, a parrotlet and a quaker parrot and all are small parrots with huge personalities.

I think quaker may be a good choice for you. I bought mine on sell at a pet store for $125. They were $175. But you may be able to find them even cheaper. My quaker was born in April and it is saying "whatcha doin'?", "Give me kisses!", *Gives kisses*, and says alot of other things that it is still learning. Although they are soft spoken parrots they have a pretty good vocabulary if worked with. My yellow nape amazon thinks it is her baby. :)) LOL! Please make sure you read on how to take proper care of any bird before you buy. I see way too many people who buy on impulse without researching first. I researched on parrots about a year before I ever bought one. Enjoy.

I don't really know about "personality", but I had two canaries. My birds were not all that "friendly" meaning if I let them out it took a while to catch them again. So if you are looking for a companion then I wouldn't necessarily recommend them, but I thought they were great fun. They were cheap and the male sang all the time. I loved to watch them and listen to them. I am sure you know birds are messy, but I really enjoyed them.

cockatiels or parakeets are great and have great personalitties. They are really cheap too. a parakeets price range is anywhere from 5-20$. a cockatiels price range is anywhere from 10-150$ it depends where you get them pet store is cheaper for cockatiels and parakeet doesn't matter they are cheap just about anywhere.THE GOOD THING ABOUT PARAKEETS IS THAT THEY LIVE FROM 10-20 YEARS IF YOU TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM.
Good Luck!
