Does he smoke or drink? An engraved present such as zippo lighter or hip flask always go down well. You could always look on the internet and buy a newspaper of the day he was born. Older members of society (!) love memory things. Things that involve time and thought more than money.

It depends how much you want to spend?
High: Navigator for Car
Mens Day Spa
Med: MP3 player... with songs of his time and songs you know he likes now!
A boat ride
A month long of music lessons
A month long of Dance lessons
Low: Dinner and a Movie combo gift cards.
Classic Movies of his time on DVD
Always things that remind them or take them back to their most prime years. Or anything that makes them feel they are still young enough to explore new things.

At 65, most people have got all they need, so why don't you donate some money to Water Aid in his name. You can do this on the internet and download a certificate to say that you have done it.
I did this for my cousin and her hushand for their golden wedding anniversay and they thought it was a wonderful idea.
