Since I was 18, (nine years ago) I've had several credit cards. Some I have cancelled, but I was also under the impression that not using it and letting a card expire, or not actaully activating one you apply for, cancells your card for you. That is, if the company doesn't contune to send cards, which in most cases they haven't.

Is there any way I can check to see if cards from ages ago are still mistakenly active? Is there a company I can talk to or a website I can look up to find this out?

Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com/. You are entitled to a FREE report from each of the 3 credit bureaus every 12 months. Here, you can determine which cards are active and which accounts are closed then go from there.
