Check out the following book:

"Programmable Logic Controllers - Programming Methods and Applications" ISBN 0-13-060718-5

I would highly recommend this book for a beginner as it covers the basics of ladder logic programming. In addition the book covers basic sensor and transducer operation including PID loops.

The book is pricey @ $100

Keyence offers a free beginners guide ( see link) but you have to register and it takes awhile form them to send it out

There are many cheap but less well organized resources available for free on other sites. Many manyfacturers are now beginning to market low cost micro PLC's. You can always glean information from manuals and app notes available from their web sites.

Some PLC manufacturers:
Keyence
Unitronics
GE Fanuc
Omron
PLC Direct

you can always try with the same PLC manufactures, i.e Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Mitsubishi, etc. They always have some manual that comprehends the basics of PLC programing, as you might know almost all PLC is based on Boolean Algebra or Ladder Diagrams.

You might be able to log on to AB.com and down load several PLC manuals. You want to find one that deals with ladder logic.

Or maybe call your local CED Electronics store and see they they have any "manuals" they often offer free classes or seminars.
